Haunted Tour of Macomb
November 3, 2006 at 2:12 am | In Illinois, Macomb Township, courthouse, halloween, haunted, haunted tour, macomb, macomb journal, square, tour | 13 CommentsSaturday night, Amy and I went to the haunted tour of Macomb! They only ended up charging us $10 b/c we had a small group. First, we went to basement of the courthouse, which turned out to be a lot spookier than I imagined. Through the way of the courthouse, the leaders would tell some haunting stories that happened there to set the mood. As we walked through and went up to the higher levels, they told us that they had motion lights here in the courthouse and they are known to turn on when no one is even near it. Guess what, as we were all about 40 feet from that part of the courthouse, the motion lights came on. Hmmmmm. I don’t know. Alot of people claim that they saw haunting shadows and orbs (dust, lol). Buuutt, I didn’t see anything.
Next we walked over the the Macomb Journal building (right next to the old Maurice’s in the square). Went to the basement, which looked alot like the basement of the house on ‘The Blair Witch Project.’ Above the Macomb Journal, there were three floors of abandoned motel rooms. We went to the 3rd floor, where they called the floor of evil. They even dubbed one of the room’s “The Satan Room.” I did not go near! That sort of stuff freaks me out! There was a long hallway, and they had people walk down the dark black hallway alone. Some said they heard voices, knocks, evil shadows. I was ready to get out of there! After there, we walked all the way across the square and went into the basement of an Antique building. There was NOTHING special about that place. They had just mentioned that it used to be an old morgue and burned bodies. The tour ended up lasting around 2 1/2 hours in all. Definitely worth going. I recommend going next year…

You were given false information by the tour guides. The old Lamoine Hotel was NEVER used as a funeral home OR as a crematorium for bodies. That was done next door at the TC’s/Ritz building in the early 20th century. The “Haunted” Macomb tour guides need to seriously reasess their data before charging anyone else a fee to take a “historical” tour of “Haunted” Macomb. You and your group were scammed.

I accompanied my cousin on an October 2006 walk of “Haunted Macomb”. It was a farce. The “history” given by the tour guide was meant more for atmosphere than acccuracy. Touring the Old Bailey House in pitch dark was a bad idea. Antiques could have been damaged. Worse, the upper floors of the old Lamoine Hotel were lined with debris and broken glass. I advise anyone thinking about taking this tour to save their money. This tour is a 2-hour rip-off.

sorry but none of my tour guides said the lamoine hotel was a funeral home or crematorium!!!! The history we use is public knowlege found in the archives at the courthouse available to anyone with an interest in checking our accuracy.

I went on a recent “Haunted” tour, and when we reached the Journal/Lamoine hotel building, I definitely heard one of the guides claim that the building was once used as a funeral parlor and a morgue. I didn’t question the guide’s claim to his face, but I know what I heard him say. A combination hotel/funeral home?!? I had no idea that the building was in such awful shape; the basement was even worse. I certainly hope that there wasn’t a plainclothes fire marshal in our group. I would advise any future tour groups to keep an open mind when they get to the Journal/hotel building… and maybe wear some safety gear before going upstairs or to the basement.

I went on a recent “Haunted” Macomb tour. I had no idea that the old Lamoine hotel building was in such awful shape; the basement was even worse. What I did know was what I heard one of the tour guides say, that the building was once used as a funeral home/morgue(?!?) We all make a mistake, but if that wasn’t the tour guide who made the claim – inacccurate or otherwise – who was it?

I think the tour was wonderful, I had the best time and can’t wait to take this years tour. The tour is only $13 for 2 hours of fun, what else is there to do in macomb for that price. Wow one of the tour guides made a mistake (gee he must be human). I reccomend the tours to anyone. I’ll be there for sure

I read in a recent newspaper story (either the Eagle or the Macomb Journal) that your group was planning some tours at Oakwood or other cemeteries in the area. What is the update on that? Thanks, & good luck on the tours.

Have any of your tour members submitted photos of paranormal activities from any of your stops, and can they be viewed on your website? Not only would these photos be really interesting to view, but they could be used as a tool to encourage first time visitors to take one of your tours. Just a thought. Thanks again.
